Window Features That Define Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian Homes

British architecture is rich and varied, and few elements reflect its heritage better than sash windows. Over time, these windows evolved with changing design tastes, especially across the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian periods. Understanding the differences between these styles helps homeowners restore, replace, or choose new sash windows that suit their property’s era.

Georgian Sash Windows (1714–1830)
Georgian sash windows are known for their symmetry and proportion. They typically feature:
- Six-over-six pane arrangements (sometimes more),
- Narrow glazing bars,
- Tall, elegant proportions.

Georgian homes favoured uniformity. Sash windows were set within brick facades with minimal external decoration. Modern replicas often use slimline double glazing to preserve the narrow bar appearance.

Victorian Sash Windows (1837–1901)
Victorian architecture embraced ornamentation, and sash windows became more decorative:
- Two-over-two pane layout was common,
- Sashes featured horns (curved timber extensions at the base of the top sash),
- Frames were often deeper and had more detailed joinery.

Victorian sash windows sometimes included stained glass or coloured fanlights above the window. They’re ideal for bold restoration work with heritage detailing.

Edwardian Sash Windows (1901–1910s)
The Edwardian era combined Georgian elegance with Victorian detail:
- Multi-pane upper sashes over single-pane lower ones,
- Wider window openings,
- Bolder glazing bars and frames.

These windows gave a light, airy feel and often appeared in bay or bow window formations. Edwardian homes in London suburbs like Barnet or Muswell Hill often retain original timber sash windows.
